Potential for Prosperity Set

I've been deliberating about the Prosperity Set for a while, but I'm no longer comparing this to other options, just trying to figure out the potential of this one item. I'm giving serious thought to cancelling the set I have on order - ordered 1/2/09, and it has a back-order date that continues to be extended by one day with each passing day, so I'm not all that sure I'll ever get it, anyway.

I'm wondering what kind of appreciation value this set might have long term. It does bring the number of both coins issued above other fractionals from 2008, which I think might tend to lower the individual value, but I'm trying to look at it from the perspective of the set as a whole and whether it has much potential to appreciate.

Do you guys think this set might have much numismatic potential in and of itself in the long run, or would I simply be paying more for bullion than is warranted? (Opinions only - no advice sought . . . sometimes I weary of listening to the voices in my own head, so I go looking for other voices.)

The good thing is the order was put in place when the set was $1075, and it's more than that now - and likely to be even more by tomorrow. I would be buying it with the idea of making a profit in the future - which is always a gamble, I know that - just wondering what other people thought of this item. It doesn't seem to get much attention, even considering there's a fractional Buff in it.

Re: Potential for Prosperity Set

There are very few of these sets on ebay, last one sold for $1,300
About the same seperately.
I don't think they'll go down from here.
Both are popular coins that are no longer made...forever.
Wish I could be more help.
I'm speculating on one set, if I get it.
Furthermore, the mint has not offered any eagles yet this year.
What if they don't?

Re: Potential for Prosperity Set

That one on ebay at $1300 is the only one I've been able to find that sold at all . . . I've seen others offered but not sold. Maybe because they're not out of stock (yet) and people have started them at too high a price.

I love the set for the BUFFALO is now KAPUT (no MORE AVAILABLE period) as will be the EAGLES ASAP when the US Teasury wakes up and cancels the other 10% of the PMs they left available.

Re: Potential for Prosperity Set

As a set I don't think this thing is going to appreciate much. I think that this set is tied too much to its Asian audience and will not appreciate in the minds of the core of American numismatists. But there is a difference between the set and the Coins. I am one of the unfortunates waiting on one of these things, and I think that I will buy some of the frac packaging off ebay and sell them as individual coins. I will probably turn around and sell the eagle straight off, 'cause I don't go in for numismatic bullion generally. I will keep the buffalo longer because it really is a limited issue of a popular coin.

I was thinking about going the other route, and selling the buffalo for $750 (Maybe sell the box for $25) and keeping the 1/2 oz eagle for $300.
If the buffalo is a gem BU, I might get it graded.

Re: Potential for Prosperity Set

I think I may keep this order open and my fingers crossed - they went up again at the mint, now $1,225.00 per set, close to $150 above my order price.

This is funny - it's like the Mint heard me thinking about cancelling the order. As of this afternoon, my Prosperity Set now says "in stock and reserved", doesn't mention a back-order date, and the "cancel" box has disappeared.

I guess I'm not cancelling this order.

Mine changed to In Stock and Reserved, but I still have my cancel box.:bear_cry:

I'm sure I'm speaking for everyone when I say FINALLY! No more cancel box either...no choice for them but to send it...HA! Just when I say that they'll cancel it...HAHAHAHA!

Re: Potential for Prosperity Set

No BODY knows the future; no one . That being said, perhaps the trend can be our friend . The US Mint has cancelled many a gold and platinum coin recently :4_1_72:- perhaps 90% of same:4_1_72:. It reminds me of the pre 1830s days when gold was a NON survivor in almost any numismatic form:signs14:. JUST :36_1_25:Take a look at the prices for coins prior to 1830.

So any recent PM coin in a US BOX you can BUY might really escalate in nominal value. Especially if the trend turns into a 100% cancellation ratio.

But, then again, who knows. :5_1_120::signs14:

Re: Potential for Prosperity Set

I just checked the order status of my Prosperity set on the mint website. The set I ordered back on 12-20 has finally shipped, today. It has been a long time in coming. I hope it is worth it.

Clawdia 02-09-2009 01:58 PM

Re: Potential for Prosperity Set

I had such hope - but sure 'nuff, mine still hasn't shipped, even tho the 'cancel box' option disappeared last week.

I thought sure they might have shipped out all the back-ordered ones today, but I guess not . . .

Re: Potential for Prosperity Set

I called the Mint today to ask why mine was still "on hold", they said that they had been overwhelmed with orders for the UHRDE and were asking customers to give them at least two weeks before they could get around to releasing the newer Prosperity Set orders (ordered on Jan 30th). Then you might have another week wait while they get around to shipping it. I found that a rather poor excuse for holding $1175 of my dollars hostage for a month, so I canceled my order and bought a 2009 GAE from APMEX on this dip instead. I still have an UHRDE on order but these folks are trying my patience.

My prosperity set came in this morning. WOW, I am impressed. The Mint has presented this very well. It was worth the wait. I don't care if this set appreciates or not. I would not even think of selling it. :10_1_20:

Re: Potential for Prosperity Set

I just checked my order tracking . . . my Prosperity Set shipped today! I'm so excited . . . can't wait to see it! Looks like a UPS tracking number, altho it says "Parcel Post" - the only other time I got an order UPS from them it was here the very next day.

I bought it with the notion of making a profit at some point, and I may still hope to do that, but in the meantime I intend to just enjoy having it, and admiring it.

After a wait of a nearly a month and a half, the Mint's finally made me a happy camper.

My wife told me that the UPS guy left a box from the mint on the front porch.

Apparently they dont need anyone to sign for 2 oz of gold, lol.

(I bought two sets)

Re: Potential for Prosperity Set

I think you guys will like the presentation of the prosperity set. Of course, my expectations were very low because I had purchased the Celebration coin several months back and the presentation of that coin was absolutely pathetic. But as poor as the Celebration coin is the prosperity set makes up for it. The Mint did a first class job.

Re: Potential for Prosperity Set

They finally shipped mine also! I've been waiting since 1/9/2009...they're going straight to PCGS when I get them!

I got mine. They look pretty good. About what I was expecting.

Only problem is that I think this box is going to be too large for a normal size safety deposit box.

How did they ship your set? I have a UPS tracking number, but they're saying that it's Parcel Post. I'm confused. 1ZE1988XXXXXXXXXXXXX PARCEL POST

Clawdia 02-11-2009 12:09 AM

Re: Potential for Prosperity Set

Mine say parcel post, too - but when I plugged the number into UPS tracking, they told me it was shipped with them via next day air and will be here tomorrow.

Mine will be here tomorrow too.

Got the set this morning and it is beautiful!
I like the Buffalo, but the 1/2 ounce eagle is a real stand out!
I louped it and it is flawless in every way.
Wow! It is the nicest half eagle I've ever seen, strike and luster is amazing!
This one will get graded! Two slabs will fit nicely in the presentation box too.

I must say I'm more taken with the appearance of the 1/2 buffalo proof coin that I have than with this one . . .

I don't intend to have these graded, but will let them stay as-is in their original packaging.

The Glock really brings out the color of the coins quite nicely.

It does offer a nice contrast too. :-)

Re: Potential for Prosperity Set

Got the set and boy are they pretty...you can really see the difference of 22K vs. 24K...My GAE looks pretty much perfect, but my Gold Buffalo has a nick on the reverse side. I'm estimating an MS70 for the GAE and an MS69 for the Buff. I have 69's and 70's to cross-reference with, so I have a pretty good idea. Kinda breaks my heart, but for $1078.88, can't be beat!

I was deciding between this set and a 2006 PR69 Buffalo (for the same price) on ebay. Finally, I decided to buy the set. I hope I made the right choice!
